Such a wonderful tradition! I used to do the same with my son when he was undergoing intense medical treatment. He chose the cookbook & the recipe & I cooked it for him while would watch & we discussed the recipe & ingredients. Not only connected us but took our minds off the nasty stuff. Thank you, your post brought back lovely memories

What an absolutely stunning collection! That’s not just a library; it’s a treasure trove of stories, flavors, and inspiration.

As a fellow cookbook lover and collector, I’m always in awe of how these books don’t just sit on shelves but live in our minds, shape our cooking, and weave themselves into our lives like your beautiful sunday ritual of cooking together. I love how they tell stories—of places, people, and traditions—which I also try to share in my own modest way. Truly inspiring!

546! Wow, what a collection! I would have a wonderful time leafing through them all, perhaps with that delicious cocktail 🍸

I adore your Sunday Dinners concept. My husband and I used to regularly do something similar but since having the children, it's become a very much a special occasion situation, like on Valentine's Day. You have inspired me to try for once a month though!

Great post 😊

Awesome post! I love the title. It’s irresistible. 546 cookbooks is quite a collection. Your poor shelf! Just kidding. There is something romantic about cookbooks. They just seem so valuable (and so hard to get rid of). I don’t think I’ve ever divested of one. Maybe passed the odd one along to someone else so it could find its way onto their shelf. But even that’s only happened on rare occasions. Some of my favourite Christmas presents have been cookbooks or handwritten recipes loose or in recipe boxes or little binders with sleeves. When my partner and I got married almost 20 years ago, that was what we asked for as wedding gifts—for friends and family to write one of their favourite recipes on a recipe card. And then we made a book out of them. Over the years as people have come and gone from our lives or passed away, it’s golden to be able to flip to the recipe they chose to share and think about them and why they chose that particular recipe for us and to see it there in their own handwriting. I think you’re right that cookbooks are even more valuable in today’s digital age. Just last weekend I asked my mom for her Johnny Cake recipe and she flipped to a page in a homemade recipe book she made that she typed out every recipe for using on our old typewriter back in the 80s. She said she could photocopy it for me and I said, naw that’s ok, I’ll just take a picture of it with my phone. You should have seen her face. It was what you might expect to see in the dictionary as an illustration of the term “perplexed.” Not quite offended but definitely shocked that the piece of paper was going to now live in my recipe archives as a digital photo on my phone. So much so that I’m debating whether I should just print it and tell her that I did so and that rest assured the recipe is now where it belongs… in a book on my shelf.

Thank you for the nice words Craig—I’m so glad you enjoyed the post. What a wonderful idea for wedding gifts! I have but a few handwritten recipes from my mother and I treasure them. I’m sure your appreciation of these treasures will only continue to grow with time. And I do love reading your daily posts; they are truly a labour of love and so very needed right now ❤️.
